**Millions**of contested chargebacks

The story in one paragraph

For years, a chargeback meant one thing: “I didn't make this purchase.” That is changing quickly. Fraud claims fell from **74.6% to 60.4%** of contested chargebacks in a single year, the lowest level in two years. Disputes over undelivered orders and subscriptions people thought they had cancelled **nearly doubled**. Shoppers are skipping the merchant's customer service desk and going straight to their bank, and banks are siding with them. Merchants face more disputes, and the disputes are getting bigger.

Story angles by beat

## Find the angle for your desk

Consumer & personal financeThe chargeback is becoming the new complaint line.

When a package doesn't arrive or a subscription keeps billing, more cardholders dispute the charge with their bank instead of contacting the merchant. “Product Not Received” and “Cancelled Recurring” now make up nearly a quarter of contested disputes, up from 13% a year ago.

Subscription economySoftware subscription chargebacks more than tripled (+222%).

The median merchant grew 51%, so this isn't driven by a few outliers. Cancellation disputes are the category's defining problem and the hardest major category to win. The report concludes that clear billing descriptors and painless cancellation flows beat fighting the disputes.

Delivery & ecommerce“Product Not Received” nearly tripled to 15% of delivery disputes.

Delivery shows the most dramatic shift in the report. Fraud fell from 79% to 66% of disputes. Consumers increasingly dispute whether the order arrived, not whether they authorized the charge.

Travel & live eventsTicketing has the most expensive disputes: $593 on average.

Travel disputes are shifting from “I didn't book this” to post-trip dissatisfaction: “Not As Described” claims grew more than a third to 12%. Ticketing is the least fraud-driven industry; the median chargeback is $292, and premium events dominate.

Fintech & financial servicesSame-merchant volume more than doubled (+107%).

The median merchant was up 71%. Service disputes are also the costlier kind here: non-fraud chargebacks average $128, compared with $85 for fraud chargebacks.

Payments & bankingWhere you process shapes whether you win: 30pp+ gaps.

Fraud win rates vary by more than 30 percentage points across major payment processors and by more than 35 points across major US card issuers. One of the two largest card networks shows fraud win rates roughly double the other's, within the same dispute type and quarter.

Regulation & EuropeUK & Ireland preview life after a regulatory shift.

Strong Customer Authentication moved fraud liability to card issuers, and fraud now accounts for just 45% of chargebacks in the region. Merchants there mostly fight service disputes instead.

Process wasteCustomers are getting refunded twice by the system itself.

Some 0.5% of contested chargebacks involved a refund issued before the dispute was filed. Every Ethoca/Verifi pre-dispute alert that escalated into a chargeback had already been refunded.

How the data was builtReal disputes, not a survey

The report is computed from real, contested chargeback disputes processed on Justt's platform between July 2024 and June 2026, with actual outcomes. Growth and mix trends use a fixed group of 165 merchants active in both comparison periods, so trends reflect behavior, not Justt adding new customers. Payment processors, issuers and card networks are not named, and absolute win rates and volumes are not disclosed. Full methodology is on pages 19–20 of the report.
